Our sales staff check times/schedules and itineraries to ensure that they are well within the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration limits for driving time, on duty time and mileage. Dispatchers make sure that drivers have received their required off duty time between trips. When a long trip requires a relief driver, dispatch will find a suitable point on the route and send the second driver out well ahead of the group to rest up and clear hours. We have two mechanics on our staff. Since we purchase all of our coaches new, they know each one and its maintenance history, inside and out. They handle all of our preventative maintenance on-site and have the authority to pull a coach out of service if they deem it necessary. We joke that, “They are Weldon’s buses. He just lets us borrow them.” All of our drivers have at least 5 years of experience behind the wheel of a motor coach and are CPR certified. They are required to do pre and post trip checks on the bus and its basic systems for every run they make. They have a say in routes, relief points and timing. We never ask a driver to take a run that he/she is not comfortable with. We have two additional staff members dedicated to safety, a Director of Safety and a Manager of Over the Road Safety. Between the two of them, they hire all new drivers, maintain our drug and alcohol policy/testing, keep us up to date on all new federal regulations and keep an eye out for new safety technologies as they become available. |
